Siemens Drive Technologies is renaming its Robicon series of medium voltage (MV) drives, which are said to be the global market leader and have sold more than 10,000 since its launch in 2004. In the future, the MV drive will be based on the Sinamics brand series that Siemens has used for other drives, and will be called Sinamics Perfect Harmony.
Siemens acquired the Robicon brand when it rescued the former Robicon company from bankruptcy in 2005. Siemens acquired US-based Robicon assets for approximately US$197.5 million, including shares in the UK subsidiary (formerly Hill Graham Controls), China, and Brazil. And Canada. Robicon’s former parent company, High Voltage Engineering (HVE), has been suffering from financial problems and filed for bankruptcy in February 2005.
Since acquiring Robicon's assets, Siemens has invested in the business, including the expansion of its production facility in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, in 2006 for $7.2 million. The company said that the Perfect Harmony Drive was added to the Sinamics product portfolio, demonstrating its commitment to technology.
Siemens calculated that the current installed capacity of Robicon products is 2.2GW. The drive has two types: air-cooled (up to 6.7MW) and liquid-cooled (up to 14.2MW).
Siemens says it will be committed to the future of the former Robicon MV drive
The modular drive adopts more than 50 patented technologies. To improve reliability, they use a battery-based design that allows the battery to be bypassed during operation while maintaining the full output voltage. Siemens claims that the drive's mean time between failures is 200,000 hours.
The driver includes a transformer with a phase-shifted secondary coil, which can provide 18 pulses or higher harmonic cancellation, and the power factor is higher than 0.95 under all operating conditions. This eliminates the need for input harmonic filters or power factor compensation, while avoiding the application of common-mode voltage to the motor.
