Siemens is supplying Otter Tail Power Company with two Robicon Perfect Harmony VFDs to its South Dakota plant as part of a US$490 million environmental renovation project, which is scheduled to be completed in 2015.

Siemens cooperated with Vogner Engineering Sales Company and was selected by Otter Tail Power Company to provide its Big Stone factory with two Robicon Perfect Harmony variable frequency drives (VFD) for environmental upgrades. The Big Stone factory is the company's operation in the Big Stone factory Coal-fired power plant. Stone Town, South Dakota.

In May, the plant owner’s Otter Tail Power Company, Montana-Dakota Utilities Co. and Northwestern Energy approved a plan for a US$490 million environmental renovation, including a new air quality control system to be put into use within five years of environmental protection . The agency approved the South Dakota Haze National Implementation Plan.

Two Siemens Robicon Perfect Harmony WCIII drives will support a new dry scrubber to reduce sulfur dioxide. The plan also requires the use of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) devices to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.

Siemens Robicon Perfect Harmony drives use a series of low-voltage units, which are linked together and precisely scaled to accommodate various voltages and output powers. Battery bypass can ensure that the failed battery is automatically bypassed in less than 500 milliseconds, and there is no need to shut down the entire drive. Instead, the process tolerance protection system (ProToPS) provides a layered warning system. This control strategy allows time to assess the situation and respond appropriately. The concept also makes it easy to access drive components for regular maintenance. Siemens VFD also meets the IEEE 519 input power harmonic distortion standard.

The Otter Tail Power Company estimates that the renovation of the 475-megawatt Dashi Power Station that has been in operation since 1975 will be completed in mid-2015.
