Verification and Correction Procedure for the Wiring and Operation of
the Precharge Circuit Breaker K2 Electromechanical Interlock
1. PURPOSE
1.1. This procedure is to be used to verify proper operation and wiring of the K2
Electromechanical Interlock on SIEMENS SINAMICS GH180 6SR327 Water-Cooled
Variable Frequency Drives (VFD).
The wiring error is known to be on the K2 Key Interlock contact block. The wiring error
reduces the number of protection layers for personnel accessing various compartments
in the VFD. The wiring shall be corrected before any further operation.
2. SCOPE
2.1. This procedure is applicable to the following products which are potentially affected by a
wiring error on the following products:
2.1.1. Water Cooled; SINAMICS, PERFECT HARMONY, VFD, GH180 6SR327
3. DEFINITIONS
3.1. Key Interlocks: As a standard all high voltage access points require a special tool to gain
access. Key and/or mechanical interlocks are available as an additional protection to
access various compartments in the VFD. Key interlocks are intended to interlock the
VFD high voltage sections with the customer input circuit breaker when needed perform
maintenance.
3.2. Door: Is defined as a hinged panel, as opposed to a bolt-on panel.
3.3. K2 Key Interlock: The K2 Lock electrically locks-out the circuit breaker CB2, which
supplies the low voltage (380V/480V/600V Typical) Cell Precharge Power.
3.4. Qualified personnel: Those who, based on their training and experience, are capable of
identifying risks and avoiding potential hazards when working with these
products/systems.

5. RESPONSIBILITIES
5.1. The product/system described in this documentation shall only be operated only by
personnel qualified for the specific task in accordance with the relevant documentation,
in particular its warning notices and safety instructions.
6. PREREQUISITES
6.1. System Condition: this procedure is applicable to a VFD that is in normal operating
configuration and is not undergoing service and/or repairs. Normal VFD operation
configuration shall be established before executing this procedure.
7. PROCEDURE
7.1. Perform the following steps to verify that the K2 Interlock is wired per design.
7.1.1. Review the equipment specific Key Interlock design and procedures and identify
the Key Interlocks named K1, K2 and K3. Typical design shown in Figure 1.

7.1.2. Verify that the equipment is off and power secured in accordance with equipment
electrical isolation procedures and local site procedures.
DANGER: Hazardous Voltage. The Perfect Harmony VFD as standard does not provide isolation
from MV power. Separate, user supplied isolating methods are required. Consult the key
interlocking schematic diagram furnished with each VFD’s factory production drawing set to
determine the interlocking supplied with the VFD.
DANGER: Electrical Hazards, ensure the system is electrically isolated and that no hazardous
voltages are present.

WARNING: Hazardous Voltage. The system contains capacitors that store hazardous energy. Do
not service until these capacitors have been safety discharged in accordance with the operation
and maintenance manual(s).
NOTE: For other hazards please consult the operation and maintenance manual(s) supplied with
the equipment, specifically the product user manual.
7.1.3. Isolate the VFD Input Medium Voltage breaker which is controlled by the K1
Interlock Key and secure power in accordance with equipment electrical isolation
procedures and local site procedures.
NOTE: During this procedure Siemens recommends that the VFD cooling system remain
operational.
Operation of the cooling system after VFD shutdown removes residual heat from the VFD.
Removing the residual heat limits the temperature to a level consistent with steady state VFD
operation. This reduces heat stress to components ensuring longer life.
7.1.4. Insert the K1 Interlock Key into the Key Transfer Box on the VFD cabinet (See
Figure 2).

7.1.6. Isolate the power feed (120V Typical) to the Control System (VFD Specific)
located in the Control Cabinet and secure in accordance with equipment electrical
isolation procedures and local site procedures.
DANGER: Hazardous Voltage. Some versions of the 6SR327 do not have a separate 120V
Control power feed. These versions have Control power (120V) supplied from a Control Power
Transformer internal to the VFD which is powered from the same feed supplying the Precharge
Circuit breaker (CB2). Control power and Precharge Circuit Breaker power feeds shall be verified
as de-energized before proceeding with this procedure. If site power cannot be verified as deenergized, STOP and contact Siemens.
7.1.7. Open the Control Cabinet door.
7.1.8. Locate the K2 interlock assembly (See Figure 4).

7.1.9. Verify that the wiring on the opposite key side of the K2 interlock (See Figure 5)
is correct using Table 1 below.

7.1.10.If the wiring is correct, proceed to Step 7.2 to verify operation. If the wiring is
incorrect, proceed to the next step.
DANGER: Hazardous Voltage. If the wiring is found to be incorrect, then the VFD has a
reduced number of protection layers for personnel accessing various compartments in the
VFD. Key interlocks are intended to interlock the VFD high voltage sections with the
customer input circuit breaker when needed to perform maintenance. The wiring shall be
corrected before any further operation.
7.1.11. Isolate power in order to perform the repair and secure in accordance with
equipment electrical isolation procedures and local site procedures.
7.1.12. Correct the wiring per the drawings furnished with the VFD and proceed to Step
7.2. If unable to correct the wiring, STOP and contact Siemens.
7.2. Perform the following steps to verify that the Precharge Circuit Breaker (CB2) Trips
when the K2 Interlock Key is removed.
NOTE: This verification ensures that K2 Interlock is wiring correctly. When the K2 interlock key is
removed or control power (120V) is removed, the Precharge Circuit Breaker (CB2) is designed
and wired to trip on an under voltage condition.
7.2.1. Isolate the VFD Input Medium Voltage breaker which is controlled by the K1
Interlock Key and secure power in accordance with equipment electrical isolation
procedures and local site procedures.
7.2.2. Insert the K1 Interlock Key into the Key Transfer Box on the VFD cabinet (See
Figure 2).
7.2.3. Open the Control Cabinet.
7.2.4. Verify that the Control Power (120VAC) is ON and that the control system is
energized. Note: The Controller lights will be illuminated if control system is
energized (See Figure 4).
7.2.5. Verify that the Precharge Circuit Breaker is in the ON position (See Figure 6).
NOTE: If the breaker is not in the ON position, then it must be placed in this position to continue
K2 verification.

7.2.6. Identify the K2 Key in the Control Tub.
7.2.7. Turn and remove the K2 key.
NOTE: Turning and removing the K2 Key electrically locks-out the circuit breaker CB2, which
supplies the low voltage (380V/480V/600V) Cell Precharge Power.
7.2.8. Verify that the Precharge Circuit Breaker trips and is in the trip position (See
Figure 6). If the breaker does NOT trip, STOP and contact Siemens. If the breaker
does trip, proceed to the next step.
DANGER: Hazardous Voltage. If the Precharge Circuit Breaker does NOT trip, then the VFD has a
reduced number of protection layers for personnel accessing various compartments in the VFD.
Key interlocks are intended to interlock the VFD high voltage sections with the customer input
circuit breaker when needed to perform maintenance. The VFD shall be repaired before any
further operation.
7.2.9. Return the VFD to safe operating condition and resume operation.
